Fighting the Sun One Coat at a Time
Deck staining and sealing is routine upkeep for any wood deck, and in Honolulu it comes around faster than most owners expect. With an annual average UV index of 9.7 and about 278 sunny days a year, the sun breaks down the surface fibers of bare wood, turns it gray and opens small checks where water can get in. Stain or oil with pigment buys time against that. It does not stop it, so the real question is which finish you are willing to keep up.
Stain, sealer or paint
- Clear sealers repel water but offer little UV protection, so wood still grays
- Semi-transparent stains add pigment that blocks UV while showing the grain; a common choice here
- Solid stains look closer to paint and hide more, but can peel on walking surfaces
- Penetrating oils soak in and are easy to recoat, especially on hardwoods like ipe
Pigment is what protects against UV, so the clearer the finish, the sooner it needs to be renewed in strong sun.
Cleaning and sanding come first
A finish only lasts as long as its bond to the wood. We wash the deck with a wood cleaner, use a brightener to restore the wood's pH and color, and let it dry fully before any coat goes on. Peeling old finish has to come off by stripping or sanding. Raised grain and splinters are sanded. We keep washing pressure low so the wood is not furred or gouged.
Checking for damage while we are there
Staining day is a close look at every board. We note soft spots, mud tubes from termites, popped screws and rusted hardware and tell you about them before we coat over anything. Staining over rot only hides it.
Weather and timing
Honolulu's summer is dry, which helps. Most rain falls from October to early April, and windward and valley homes see far more of it. We schedule around the forecast, avoid coating in direct midday sun when the finish can flash dry, and stay off windy days when dust and leaves blow onto wet stain.
Railings, stairs and covers
Vertical railings and covered areas wear more slowly than the deck floor, so they may not need a full coat every time. Stair treads wear fastest. We price the floor, rails and stairs separately so you can decide what needs doing now.
Composite decks
Composite boards do not need staining. They do benefit from a periodic wash to remove dirt, pollen and mildew, using cleaners the board maker approves. We can wash composite decks and check the frame and hardware at the same visit.

Deck Staining & Sealing Questions
How often should a deck be stained in Hawaii?
More often than mainland guides suggest, because of the strong sun. When water stops beading and the color has faded, it is time. Floors and stair treads usually need it before railings do.
What does deck staining cost in Honolulu?
Angi's 2026 national average is about $850, with most jobs between $550 and $1,250, or roughly $2 to $4 per square foot. Angi notes costs run higher in high cost-of-living areas. A written price follows a quick look at the deck.
Is a clear sealer enough in Honolulu?
A clear sealer repels water but blocks little UV, so the wood will still gray. A semi-transparent stain or a pigmented oil gives more sun protection while showing the grain.
Can you stain over old peeling stain?
Not well. New finish will peel with the old layer. Loose finish needs to be stripped or sanded off first so the new coat bonds to clean wood.
